Imagine a world where your energy bills are not just reduced but entirely eliminated. Hill Homes is turning this vision into reality with a groundbreaking initiative at Hollymead Square, Newport, Wales. Partnering with Octopus Energy, Hill Homes introduces Zero Bills, a world-first smart tariff by Octopus, ensuring residents enjoy five years of guaranteed bill-free living.

Octopus Energy’s Zero Bills Tariff is a transformative approach to sustainable living. This innovative smart tariff is exclusive to homes equipped with solar panels, batteries, and cutting-edge smart technology—all meticulously optimised by Octopus Energy’s technological prowess. Residents of one of the 64 new homes at Hollymead Square, are not just getting a home; they’re securing a future with no energy bills for at least five years, backed by the pioneering Octopus Zero Bills ‘stamp.’

Coming soon, the Hollymead Square development could become a blueprint for showcasing how this revolutionary partnership between Hill Homes and Octopus Energy is reshaping the landscape of homeownership, offering a bill-free haven for the years to come.

The Zero tariff is offering a fixed-rate plan covering both electricity import and export. Here’s an overview:

Eligibility Criteria:
To qualify, residents must inhabit an Octopus ZERO approved home with the requisite Octopus Energy-approved heat pump, solar PV, and battery systems. Continuous WiFi connectivity, remotely programmed and unchanged PV inverter and home battery, and a Smart Meter for both import and export are necessary prerequisites.

Tariff Adjustments:
Should eligibility criteria change during the tariff term, customers may be shifted to a more suitable alternative tariff. Octopus Energy relies on information provided by developers or house builders, emphasising the importance of accurate data for tariff qualification.

Export Tariff:

  • Customers on Octopus Zero cannot simultaneously be on any other export tariff.

Charge Structure:

  • No standing charge.
  • 10 MWh of free energy import over 12 months.
  • Energy import beyond 10 MWh billed at the agreed-upon rate during sign-up.
  • Electric vehicle charging not included in the 10 MWh free allowance, billed separately.

Equipment Maintenance Commitment:

  • Customers commit to proper maintenance of Octopus ZERO approved home equipment following manufacturers’ guidelines, using approved engineers.

Building new homes with integrated solar panels, heat pumps, and storage presents a transformative approach to sustainable living, offering numerous advantages over retrofitting these technologies later. First and foremost, incorporating these features during construction allows for seamless integration, optimising the home’s design for energy efficiency from the outset. This holistic approach ensures that each component complements the others, creating a more efficient and environmentally friendly system.

Financially, the initial investment in integrated renewable energy technologies during construction can be more cost-effective than retrofitting. Retrofitting often involves structural modifications and may require additional expenses for adapting existing infrastructure, making it a more complex and potentially pricier endeavor. Building with these technologies in mind from the start eliminates the need for such extensive modifications.

Beyond cost savings, integrating solar panels, heat pumps, and storage during construction aligns with long-term environmental goals. It minimises the environmental impact associated with retrofitting, reduces construction waste, and fosters a more sustainable approach to housing development. Additionally, residents benefit from immediate access to energy-efficient systems, enjoying lower utility bills and a reduced carbon footprint from day one.

Moreover, constructing homes with these technologies in place contributes to a broader shift toward renewable energy adoption. It sets a standard for environmentally conscious building practices, encouraging the industry to prioritise sustainable solutions. Ultimately, building new homes with integrated solar, heat pumps, and storage not only enhances energy efficiency and affordability but also represents a vital step in addressing climate change and promoting a greener, more sustainable future.
