Initially offering free electricity to customers in the South-East and East of England, Power-ups is now being rolled out to specific areas of Scotland. The unique feature of this trial is that during designated Power-ups, it is reported that customers will get a 50% discount on their electricity bills during events that last for between one two hours at a time. This incentive is designed to encourage consumers to use surplus green energy on sunny and windy days at times of low demand.

The Power-ups Concept:

With a commitment to maximising the potential of renewable energy, Octopus Energy is urging residents in areas rich in green generation to leverage surplus power when it’s most abundant. The initiative, currently in its trial phase with the National Grid ESO, is exclusively available to customers equipped with connected smart meters in specific regions.

How Power-ups Work:

– Power-ups will typically last for an hour or two, occurring when wind energy constitutes a high percentage of the electricity mix and demand is low, often during the night.

– Customers will receive advance notice via email on the morning of the Power-up and can opt in to participate.

– During the Power-up period, all electricity consumption will be offered at a 50% discount, providing an ideal opportunity to run appliances or charge electric vehicles.

– The timing of Power-ups will vary across different areas, ensuring a localised approach to utilising surplus renewables.

– Octopus Energy will calculate the amount used during each Power-up and reimburse customers with account credits every few weeks, effectively halving the cost of electricity during these periods.

– The trial phase was set to commence on December 6th in Scotland, with plans to extend and open it to other areas based on the success of the pilot.

Eligibility and Participation:

To be part of Power-ups in Scotland, customers must meet the following criteria:

– Be an Octopus Energy customer.

– Reside in specific areas in Scotland (postcode eligibility can be checked).

– Have a connected smart electricity meter, that has been sending Octopus half-hourly readings over the last 20 days.

– Not be signed up for Octoplus. Customers need to choose between Power Ups and the Saving Sessions as customers aren’t able to sign up to both.

Octopus Energy is encouraging interested customers to add their names to the Power-ups project, with plans to periodically include new eligible participants.

Join the Movement:

To express support for extending Power-ups across the UK, Octopus Energy invites customers to join a petition, emphasising the demand for this innovative approach to sustainable energy consumption.

As Power-ups kick off in Scotland, it marks a significant stride toward a future where clean energy isn’t just efficient but also affordable for everyone. Octopus Energy’s initiative highlights the potential for individuals to play a vital role in making a greener and more sustainable world.
